CHAPTER 17

"You're not leaving the house, Emma," Ethan said as soon as they entered. "And you're not going to be alone with that man. You're not going to be alone with anyone!"

Her brother scratched his face in a nervous gesture and began to walk around the room in an aimless manner. A part of her knew that Ethan was right, but then another part of her resisted the idea.

"I'm not going to put myself in a cage again. I came here with a dream to be free, to be like everyone else, to have a normal life. I'm not going to lose that," she complained, and went to the sofa to lie down. She was cold, her body ached from the fall, and when she tried to cover herself with a blanket, she realized she had left it outside.

"Listen, okay? This time you have to listen to me. We gotta sort things out, and find a way to keep you safe. Can't take chances with you going out there. I was gone for only a couple hours and I came back just to find you about to be raped by that creep!" Ethan clenched his hands so tightly that a strand of blood dripped to the floor. Now he appeared to have claws.

Her brother was out of his mind; with each passing moment, his behavior was changing, and became more and more erratic. He seemed to be suffering in a way that was not only mental but also physical. It was as if his body wanted something he couldn't give it.

For a few moments Emma said nothing. She rubbed her arms against the cold and looked at the extinguished fireplace. She could ask her brother to light it, or she could do it herself, but a thought crossed her mind.

She fixed her gaze on the fireplace and whispered, "Fire." As the flame ignited and the remains of the wood began to crackle, Emma looked at her brother. "Oh God, it's all true."

Ethan looked at the fire and then at her. His expression was one of astonishment, but not real surprise. "Holy mother of... your magic is awakening, Emma! Nobody can know about this. If anyone finds out... damn, I screwed up when I told Tala. I was just worried about my cravings, and now you're in deep trouble because of me."

"Now no one can know about it?" she shouted, getting up from the sofa with anger, but when she made that sudden move, a painful grimace came into her face due to the pain in her hip. "You're right, you didn't think for a moment about the consequences of your words."

Her brother approached her fast with a worried look on his face, but Emma stepped back. "I just need to be sure that this guy hasn't done anything to you, because if he has, I swear I'll hunt him down and snap his neck!" Every word out of her brother's mouth was filled with anger. Where was the boy who was always joking and smiling?

"You're the one who hurt me!" she accused.
